In this issue: PALISADE (“Grand Valley”) Races ! Local winners are Kqthy Meyer, Matt Flattery, Danyielle Blaylock, Ella Dewolf & Zach Desmond ! BEE-LAY-TID headless commentary
Thanks to Corey Hinman, Karla Nephew, Bob & Vicky Thome, & Tom Ela for contributions to this edition
A CORREXION by/from the Editor: in the last issue (last month) I/we reported that a female finisher in the “Just Peachy 5k” did an outstanding job for her age. Lexi Chelle was listed as 58 years in her present incarnation – whereas she is/was actually 18. Still, 20:09 is a GOOD TIME, regardless of age. (the editor maintains that this ERROR was due to the race-results, where it is probable someone writing down results inserted a “5” for the “1”. Sorry, Lexi! But I suspect you’ll still be running fast in 40-some years) (another) NOTE: see commentary about another mis-identification after the HEADLESS results.

Women participants in the LONG HAUL outnumber their male counterparts by almost 2:1. KATHY MEYER (Fruita) was 5th over-all with a 5-minute margin over ladie’s runner-up (& master’s winner) Melinda Marks. MATT FLATTERY (G.J.) and Derek Krcil must have run some (much?) of the course together, as they finished less than ½-minute apart. Master’s Fastest Michael O’Dwyer (from Las Vegas) was 3rd.

The women racers were more than double the men, with DANYIELLE BLAYLOCK (G.J.) the fastest lady, 8th over-all, with a minute margin over runner-up Amy Cook (Montrose) – who was Master’s winner. KERMIT SNYDER was the day’s only non-local winner (Rocky Ford) – his time provided a comfortable margin over 2nd-place Jeff Rice (Montrose). Mr. Snyder was also Master’s fastest.

MMS Directors meeting, Sept. 14: 9 directors were in attendance. We discussed “the usual” – upcoming races, with emphasis on those we are “involved with” (timing & etc.) Conrad announced that we (MMS) are at the beginning of (presumably new) “income cycle.” (Whatever THAT means). Dr. Andy recently met a fellow who was allegedly “kicked out” of a couple San-Diego-CA running clubs because he wasn’t “fast enough.” Karla quipped “& here we have the BEER MILE.”
Corey reported that there was “nothing new to report” regarding trail-work, etc. She was considering organizing a “trail work day” later this year. UPDATE: see announcement regarding Oct. 30 T W D (trail werk-day) at the Bang’s Canyon Trailhead. The potential “logging problem” with the GMNC (Grand-Mesa Nordic Council) has been alleviated. The logging was postponed to March or later. Martin is planning on putting on XC-skiing clinics for MMS members. Andy cheered us up by stating that there are “more RINO virus cases than Covid” in our area right now. (symptoms are practically identical). GMNC’s first XC-ski race is scheduled for the first weekend in December. And sadly, MadMoose no longer is conducting the Moab Winter Sun 10k …
The M M S Directors, currently, are:
KARLA NEPHEW – President (& Jaguar-Timing-System).
ANDY WINNEFELD – Vice-President (& frequent medical insight).
TOM ELA – Membership (among many other things). ROSCO BETUNADA – Secretary, NL.
LARRY INGRAM -- Calendar, Race Director Consultant. MARTIN WIESIOLEK -- Web Site &.
SHERYL DOUGLAS (former President). COREY HINMAN (GVTA Liason).
CONRAD COLE – Treasurer & Purchaser of Stuff.
Striders T-shirts are available for $20. Pick one up at a group run or contact Karla at [email protected].
Please note that we are trusting that if you show up for group runs or events, you are either vaccinated or you will adhere to recommended safety protocols of masking and distancing. Thanks for keeping the community healthy!
Chasing the Sky is the story of Doug and Melinda McCaw’s trail run of the entire 490-mile Colorado Trail the summer of 2020. The couple ran the trail in 18 consecutive days starting on July 16, 2020. The run was a personal challenge to see what they could accomplish that turned into a fundraiser to help support Kids Aid Backpack Program and Intermountain Adventist Academy.
Come watch this film and help raise funds for these worthy non-profits that help elevate kids!
October 27 at Picture Show Theater - 6 pm Tickets can be purchased at https://elevatekids.org/events/ There may be Striders ultra-runners present at one or both to talk and answer questions.

Striders trail work day: Saturday, October 30, 9:00am - Bangs Canyon Trailhead
Join us for a Striders group trail work day! We will be focusing on brush and debris removal along with route re-establishment on the Mica Mine trail. Heavy rains this year resulted in flash flood debris and significant trail damage in some areas of the trail that needs to be addressed. We are expecting the work session to last about 4 hours.
What to bring: sturdy shoes, wear long pants, work gloves, water.
RSVP please: SIGNUP (NOTE: this link, especially in/on a paper newsletter, probably won’t work. See Tom Ela email regarding this!)

Saturday, November 6 Rim Rock Marathon and Half Marathon
Rim Drive over Colorado National Monument to Fruita. There is a discount code available for paid Strider members under Special Deals on the Strider webpage. Contact me if you have trouble accessing that. Rim Rock register should/might be the link/whatever on the MMS web-page.
We hope a lot of runners come to “our” local Marathon (& ½), but … many people will be going to the:
Nov. 6 & 7: Moab Trail Marathon (& ½ M, also 5k “adventure run” & “kid’s 5k”) The Marathon is the USATF Trail M National Championship. www.moabtrailmarathon.com/ NOTE: the Saturday (11/6) events are full, but as of “press-time” the 11/7 event still open. Event? Yes, the organizers are having all 4 events conducted on Saturday, but since the ½ M is so popular, there is yet another, separate (awards ‘n such) half-marathon on Sunday Nov. 7.
Nov. 20: Dead Horse Ultras (Moab, of course), 50 MILE, 50k, & 30k madmooseevents.com

The Headless (we all know it’s ‘Chicken’, rite?) F i v e K August 28, Fruita (CO)
This year’s “Mike” was run/allowed-to-take-place/conducted a few months past/passed the normal date of occurrence. These have been slightly more-so than slightly weird times. Speaking of times: 17:44 won the women’s race, and 16:41 for the men. GRETA VAN CALCAR and KIEN COGLEY were the runners posting those marks. There were 238 finishers.
WOMEN: 1. Van Calcar (age 23) – 17:44. Greta was 3rd over-all. 2. Ella Unrein (15) – 19:23 3. Addison Eyre (also 15) – 19:47 The “Mike” was ‘compact’ or stream-lined with respect to the Age Groups. 12&under won by B. Reimer, 26:34. 13-20 was paced by Unrein and Eyre, 3rd was Miranda Deeths, 20:48. 21-35: Greta; 2. Salome Emmanuel, 20:22 3. Victoria Lautzenheiser, 21:58 36-50: Cheryl Stahly, 21:15; 2. Lindsay Stansfield, 22:25 3. Jillian Bearden, 22:26 (win’s women’s Masters) 51-65: Sue Bardsley, 26:36 2. Robin S Broughton, 26:44 3. Mary Pitz, 28:49 65+ : Sherry Brown, 29:59
MEN: 1. Cogley (age 17), 16:41 2. Shane Nicsic (29), 16:58 3. (4th over-all) Oliver Balestrieri (17), 18:03 4th male: Finn Witham (16), 18:04
Age groups: 12&under: W. Reimer, 21:55! 13-20: Cogley, Balestrieri, Witham 21-35: Niksic
2. Dalton Haraway, 19:15; 3. Anders Van Calcar, 19:29 35-50: Sean Meissner (first master), 19:51; 2. Clint Knopp, 23:21; 3. Stephen Rodriguez, 24:30 51-65: Joel Kincaid, 21:40; 2. Dave Karisny, 25:54; 3. Darrell Duchon, 28:49 65+: Jan Frisby, 24:57; Patrick Wathen, 27:20; 2. Jim Krein, 28:22
There was a “minor” problem with identifying at least one runner. JAN FRISBY was listed as the women’s winner for the “seasoned” age group. But Jan did win the men’s 65+ age group.
